The term 'breakdown printing' may be unfamiliar, but it describes perfectly a process that offers an easy and spontaneous introduction to using the silkscreen.
Essentially breakdown printing involves applying thick dye paints or print paste directly on to the back of the screen, which is left to dry. It is then printed off with more dye paint or print paste, or a combination thereof.
This fresh print 'media' gradually dissolves the dried-on material on the screen - breaking it down as an ever-changing array of colours, marks, textures and distressed, organic and disintegrating effects it printed off.
Clear print paste and discharge media can also be used, as outlined in the DVD and book.
Breakdown printing will encourage anyone who is nervous about screen printing to get started.
